Teaching in 3D: the Cyber Classroom at the Frankfurt Book Fair
Classroom lectures are a thing of the past. The syllabus of tomorrow is interactive. At the Frankfurt Book Fair (10 – 14 October 2012), exhibitors, trade visitors and others who are interested will be able to experience for themselves how interactive technologies are changing the process of knowledge transfer, for teachers and pupils alike. In Hall 4.2 – the location for STM & Academic Publishing, Specialist Information, Technology and Education – we will present the first ever 3D Cyber Classroom.
01.06.2012 Pressemeldung Frankfurter BuchmesseTogether with partners and sponsors, the Frankfurt Book Fair is creating a visionary space that will reveal the new possibilities of modern technology, and exhibit content which has been adapted accordingly. Visitors can experience live practical demonstrations of the technological innovations for the classroom and of the newly developed content, on more than 300 sq m of exhibition space. The classroom of the future is a project of the Frankfurt Book Fair, in cooperation with VISENSO, a provider of visualisation and virtual reality software, the furniture manufacturer VS Spezialmöbelfabriken, and another well-known global industrial group.
The Cyber Classroom at the Frankfurt Book Fair will include a pupils´ lounge, three teaching stations equipped with the latest technology, and a pupils´ café with internet terminals for research tasks. The three dimensional learning modules for various fields of teaching (biology, physics, maths, art, sport, chemistry, knowledge, industry, etc.) are being compiled by a team of teachers, engineers and programmers. In the lounge, multimedia video goggles will be used to share the 3D instructional content.
It is already becoming clear that interactive learning technologies will play a significant role in the future. Complicated topics that have always been impossible to demonstrate or difficult to explain, such some concepts in physics, chemistry, maths or biology, can be visualised and taught much more easily using real-time 3D modules. A study by Texas Instruments in 2011 showed that 3D learning materials have a long-term, positive influence on pupils´ learning behaviour, producing a demonstrable increase in their attentiveness and memory capacities. While the experts all agree that virtual schooling won´t supplant teachers and classrooms, in the future teachers and pupils will nevertheless find it perfectly natural to work with new technologies such as the Cyber Classroom. And that means we must anticipate some structural changes. "Teachers will become facilitators of learning," says Martin Zimmermann, the founder of VISENSO. "They will increasingly take on the role of moderators in the classroom; they will act as experts who motivate, guide and organise the process, helping pupils to focus their learning outcomes."
Susanne Funk is the Director of STM & Academic Publishing, Specialist Information, Technology and Education at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In her words, "the Cyber Classroom – the classroom of the future – fits in well with the Frankfurt Book Fair´s longstanding aspiration always to discern and reflect contemporary socio-political trends, to stimulate debate about the future, to function as a catalyst, and to provide a platform for dialogue within society. Because of our affiliation with the Association of German Publishers and Booksellers, we feel we have a special duty to address topics such as education and innovation, and to maintain good contacts with the policy makers."
Several thousand school pupils visit the Frankfurt Book Fair every year. They are followed at the weekend by families, teachers, students and a public audience with a general interest in education. The classroom of the future offers these different target groups a diverse programme, including experiences of new teaching techniques that have a big "wow" effect. On each day of the Fair, our partners will help us present an extensive programme covering topics such as maths, IT, science and technology, energy, economics and politics, and languages and the arts.
About the partners
VISENSO GmbH in Stuttgart is a leading provider of visualisation and virtual reality software, and also supplies complete solutions (software and hardware). Founded by Martin Zimmermann, the company develops tools for building interactive, experiential worlds, such as aerodynamics simulations, architectural visualisations and crash simulations. The centrepiece of this work is the visualisation and virtual reality software COVISE. Using complex data structures and processes, this can, within seconds, generate easily comprehensible 3D models, including interactive elements for the viewer. With the Cyber Classroom, VISENSO has taken the industrial version of COVISE and further developed it for use in the education sector. www.visenso.de; www.cyber-classroom.de
